Universal Square-Shank Lock: What It Is, How It Works, and Where It’s Used (Part No. 165642)

Anyone who works on the maintenance of electrical panels, industrial cabinets, or metal doors is familiar with universal cam locks: they’re affordable, versatile, and easy to replace. The universal square-key lock (part no. 165642) belongs to this family, but stands out due to the shape of the required mounting hole—square rather than round—which is designed to better resist attempts to rotate or forcibly remove the lock body.

When cut open, the body reveals a circle with a diameter of 16.2 mm on which four flat surfaces are milled at 90° intervals (14.2 mm between each flat surface): the resulting shape provides more anti-rotation contact surfaces than the standard double-D-shaped hole, making the lock more stable during opening and closing. The term “square” here refers only to the shape of the body—it should not be confused with square- or triangular-shaped socket key locks for meters and small panels, which are entirely different products.

It opens with a nickel-plated, serrated, non-reversible brass key that operates a 5-plate-cylinder barrel: the same security mechanism found in the most widely used OMR plate-cylinder cam locks, but in a body with a different profile.

    Where is it used?

    The 7-mm square terminal on the 165642 is compatible with straight, cranked, and hook-style cams, as well as multi-point cams for sliding rods; this versatility makes it suitable for a variety of applications.

     

    • Electrical panels and automation cabinets — for front and side doors of distribution and control panels, where a toothed key (not just a simple tool) is required and where it is necessary to manage multiple units using a keyed-alike code (KA) or a master key.
    • Industrial cabinets and PPE storage units — including cabinets subject to GDPR regulations for the storage of confidential documents, thanks to a combination of non-reversible keys and multiple encryption methods.
    • IT and Telecommunications Racks — Part 165642 is part of the OMR line of rack cabinets, along with micro-handles and socket key locks designed for the same type of door.
    • Vending, self-service, and automated systems —where burglary resistance and the option of sliding rods for multiple locks are required on thin metal doors.
    • Office furniture, metal cabinets, sheet-metal enclosures — anywhere a compact locking mechanism with an interchangeable rear cam is required.

    Why Is the Hole Square?

    Most cam locks on the market use a round hole with two opposing side plates—a configuration known in the industry as "double D" (Double-D)—and is by far the most common solution used in electrical panels, mailboxes, office furniture, and automotive applications.

    The square template for the 165642 is a less common but recognized alternative, distinguished from the double-D template by its greater number of anti-rotation contact surfaces: useful on panels where this type of hole is already present, or where a more solid and durable anti-rotation anchor is preferred.

    In addition to the standard features, the 165642 is available with several options:

    How to Install It

    The hole in the panel must exactly match the four-plate outline (Ø16.2 mm, 14.2 mm between plates) so that the body fits correctly and does not rotate during use. Once inserted, the lock is secured from the back using the nut on the M16x1 thread (or, alternatively, using a horseshoe clip or clip for faster installation). It is compatible with steel, aluminum, and plastic mounting surfaces, and with panel thicknesses that vary depending on the selected lock body length.
