Is it better to use a pin tumbler or a plate-cylinder?<\/h5>

Much depends on the type of application. Both cylinders operate by rotation and are commonly referred to as \"camlocks\" in that locking is accomplished by the rear rotation of a cam (also known as a \"cam\" or cam tumbler), a sling bar (multi-point cam), or a actuator (pin tumbler for centralized drawer locking using a rod mechanism). <\/p>\n

As for pin tumbler locks, the mechanism consists of brass pins pushed by springs that can be placed in line or tubular\/radial shape; plate-cylinder cam locks, on the other hand, are made of die-cast zinc (zamak) and consist of an outer bushing and a rotor, containing the spring-pushed platelets that determine the combination.<\/p>\n

The pin tumbler version is commonly used in outdoor applications or where high security is required; the plate-cylinder version, which is more suitable for making trained systems, is more economical and is ideal for multiple applications including metal furniture, industrial cabinets, lockers, mailboxes, vending and gaming machines.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

What lock size should I consider to check compatibility with the door?<\/h5>

Relative to cam locks, identifying the diameter first requires measuring the length, regarded as the distance from the base of the head to the cam attachment point.<\/p>\n

Second, working lengths (the distance between the center of the cam's fixing hole and the end point) and crank (the distance between the bottom plane and the top plane of the cam) need to be considered to ensure proper matching on the door and perfect locking.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

What is a reversible key?<\/h5>

The reversible key, as opposed to the traditional key, is a key toothed on both sides of the stem (or shank). It offers the advantage that it can be inserted into the cylinder in either direction, regardless of which direction is correct. It therefore provides greater comfort, especially in low-light conditions or visually impaired users. <\/span><\/p>\n

To dispel the myth that it offers more combinations than the traditional key, since the same combination is repeated on both sides; however, there are different types of keys, hence locks with different levels of security depending on the protection one needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

What does right hand lock and left hand lock mean?<\/h5>

The hand that is used to open the lock determines the direction in which the door is opened. In a right-handed door, for example, looking at the cabinet from the outside, the lock will be positioned on the left side and the hinges on the right side of the door; vice versa in a left-handed door. <\/p>\n

What is the difference between KA, KD and MK?<\/h5>

The locks can all be opened with the same key (KA, keyed alike), each with different keys (KD, keyed different), or each with different keys but also openable from a common passe-partout (MK, master key). In the latter case, this is a hierarchical system that can be configured on several levels. <\/p>\n

While keyed alike (KA) allows minimizing the quantity of keys, the master key system (MK) becomes a necessity when in multi-person operating environment such as in a residence, hotel, school, hospital, or industrial building, hundreds of locks with different combinations must be opened. The great convenience of the master key allows employees to open only the doors under their jurisdiction giving access to multiple areas with a single key. <\/p>\n

What happens if I lose the cams?<\/h5>

Sooner or later it happens to everyone to misplace or lose their keys, whether they are house keys, cellar keys, or more simply keys to a cabinet; to remedy this problem you can follow the following steps:<\/p>\n

In the event that there is a number listed on the cylinder, you can contact the company by requesting the nearest dealer where you can purchase replacement keys by providing the number listed.
In case you are operating within a public office or facility, contact the person in charge who most likely has an emergency pass key.
If neither of the above cases is feasible, as a last solution drill the lock with a drill so as to destroy the mechanism; this should be done with the right equipment, with extreme calm and precision, aware however that damage may be done to the structure of the furniture or object on which the lock is installed. Remember that, such a practice, performed for personal satisfaction or real necessity, should be used responsibly and legally only in property on your property. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

How do I identify a replacement lock for the old lock?<\/h5>

Beyond the functional and dimensional aspects, the first variant to take into account is the hole already present on the door.
